Activision-Blizzard announced that Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the #1 Top selling console game of the year in the United States, based on revenues. On top of that: it is also the #1 console game in the US, based on year-to-date revenues from physical sales, and the #1 top seller for the month of November, based on revenue from physical unit sales. Finally, they added a splash of more positive outlooks for their popular franchise reminding people it is the #1 video game franchise in North America for the eighth year in a row based on year-to-date physical sales. That’s a lot of word salad to digest and seems to contradict a lot of the negative reaction the game was initially having. Earning a little over 3 million dislikes on Youtube for their reveal trailer, on top of reports showing the series is down 50% in physical copy sales when compared to the initial sales of Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3, which having sold over five million copies in the first 24 hours, does make it a pretty high hurdle to jump.
Now this doesn’t mean that the game is doing poorly: being down 50% of physical copies sold still means the game has sold over three million copies since its launch. The praise Activision-Blizzard is giving it just makes it sound like it is doing better than it actually is by comparison to other titles. People might finally be getting tired of the Call Of Duty formula and yearly releases, or perhaps this particular game just didn’t resonate as well with existing fans. Whatever the case may be, Infinite Warfare isn’t currently living up to its predecessors’ initial release numbers. Time will tell if the series is due for a shakeup in the formula or if this is just a moment of fatigue from the fanbase.
